In the wake of Whitney Houston’s death and the additional focus it has put on substance abuse, especially within the entertainment community, the world is paying closer attention than ever to the struggles that many celebrities are currently facing. TMZ reported that Gerard Butler, popular movie star known most-notably for his role in 300 has been seeking in-patient treatment for the past 3 weeks due to prescription pill management. Butler, who checked himself into the facility because he felt he was relying too heavily on prescription drugs is set to leave the Betty Ford Center on Friday, they report. Although Butler has not discussed this issue openly before, it is a problem he has struggled with since the movie that helped propel him to fame, 300, was filmed in 2006. Most recently, a surfing accident in December while filming his newest movie, Of Men and Mavericks, exacerbated his pain management issues. Prescription drug abuse rates are skyrocketing and although it is typically celebrities profiled in the media, this problem is permeating into every race, class, religion and any other social qualifier imaginable within the United States today. For many, including Butler, in-patient treatment can be the best option, especially where prescription pill abuse is concerned. Each step, from the detoxification process to working on the underlying issues that have caused substance abuse, can be addressed in an in-patient setting and ideally give the person the space and time to reflect, grow and leave the program with the tools necessary to combat falling prey to addiction again. Like all of the best things in life, no one said it would be easy, they said it would be worth it. In-patient treatment may seem like a step that many people do not want to take or do not feel they have reached, but the things that can be achieved while in these treatment settings have the ability to change the course of your life forever and for the better.
